About Sam Furlong

Sam Furlong is a professional photographer based in Herefordshire, UK. He currently works as a staff photographer for Bristol based South West News producing work for the national press but also accepts freelance comissions, time permitting.

Educated at Swansea Institiute of Higher Education, he holds a degree in photojournalism and a masters in multimedia and has over 10 years experience as both a staff and freelance newspaper photographer. As a result he is a well rounded photographer able to tackle most kinds of subjects.

While on the photojournalism course Sam used the three years wisely to develop the beginnings of his own style which would hopefully set him apart from others in the years to come. He has continued to refine this through his professional life, particularly with his portraiture.

The multimedia course enabled him to become familiar with digital software such as Photoshop and helped give him an excellent understanding of digital photograpy and the principles behind it as well as a good working knowledge of image restoration and of web design. This is important as many of todays working photographers were trained and then worked with film cameras before turning to digital but have no formal training in this area. Although there is no substitute for experience, some training is essential when dealing with digital imaging if a photographer is to get the best results out of his equipment. Although there are many similarities between digital and film, there are also many differences.

Sam has had work published in various newspapers at home and abroad including the Guardian, the Western Mail, the Yorkshire Post, the Independant, Telegraph, the Observer, the Sun, the Daily Mail and many more. He originally joined the Worcester News as a staff photographer in 2003 after a brief period as a freelance. Nowadays he works for South West news in Bristol covering a wide variety of news, sports and features for the national press. He also works for a variety of private clients on comissioned work.

Shooting with the latest Canon digital equipment and using digital software to enhance and transmit his images enables Sam to get the best out of his images.

His work has been exhibited widely in the past, Including shows in London at the Old Truman Brewery. Not so active on the exhibition front these days, Sam prefers to concentrate on editorial and PR work as he finds this a much more satisfying area in which to work.

Sam is a member of the British Press Photographers Association and the National Union of Journalists.
